This is a fun, quirky, short activity that stops rowdy pupils short, and wakes sleepy ones. It’s an especially good activity with young students.
Do the following actions and have students copy you exactly after you do each one.
- Clap or (tap) a rhythmic beat once or twice.
- Recite a cheer, which is a single line of words, or simply a string of sounds.
- Repeat the same clapping or tapping rhythm as you started with.
You can also do the whole cheer (steps 1 – 3) before you have students copy it. Have in store plenty of variety and introduce them one at a time. Use the same cheer over and over until it runs out of flavour then teach the next one. You can also ask students to make up their own for use in class.
