SDEA engages in advocacy through partnerships, consultations, public forums and meetings with institutions and key policy makers locally and internationally. Over the course of more than 15 years, SDEA has worked closely with NAC (National Arts Council), MOE (Ministry of Education), NIE (National Institute of Education), WDA (Singapore Workforce Development Agency) as well as local and international learning institutions and professionals to bring drama education practices in schools and communities to a higher level.

Networking

Through our international SDEA Theatre Arts Conference, youth and community festival Celebrate Drama!, Connections platform, activities and events, we enable drama educators, applied theatre practitioners, arts managers, arts practitioners, policy makers, school leaders and community leaders to find new audiences, share ideas, projects, methodologies, experiences and research.

Professional Development

SDEA offers opportunities for drama educators and practitioners to enhance and strengthen their knowledge, skills, competencies and abilities through Continuing Education and Training courses and masterclasses. The courses and masterclasses are facilitated by masters in dramatic art forms and drama pedagogy who have been working in their respective fields for many years. We also offer a 40-hour drama pedagogy course – SDEA Drama Pedagogy: Essential Teaching and Learning Approaches, for drama educators with at least 2 years of teaching experience.

Research and Resource Centre

To foster exchange, documentation and reflection on drama and theatre practices in Singapore and the region, SDEA publishes the Dramatise journal and has established the Educators’ Repository as well as the SDEA Library and Resources which houses and shares resources that aid teaching, learning and research about arts education in Singapore. Thanks to our partnership with Routledge, our members have access to the latest academic papers in theatre and performance, exclusive discounts as well as subscription to the Youth Theatre Journal and Research in Drama Education.

SDEA is a not-for-profit organisation managed by a committee of 9 volunteer members elected on a 2-year cycle.

Committee Members are responsible for ensuring good governance for the association, forming partnerships that enhance and further SDEA’s vision and mission, and head subcommittees that programme special projects and core programmes.

The Committee is supported by the Secretariat who help look after operations, marketing and logistics.
