Human beings learn naturally through drama. Our brains are ‘wired’ for it.

As teachers we can capitalise on this and use drama as a powerful and effective pedagogy across the curriculum. With drama we can create compelling contexts for learning for students of all ages that are engaging and meaningful.

However, we also know that the better the drama experience, the better the learning outcome will be. With this in mind, this workshop will explore how teachers can move on from using one or two individual drama strategies and start to build effective dramas by combining strategies together. One practical example will have a Language focus and second will be drawn from another area of the curriculum.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

take part in practical classroom examples

reflect on the opportunities for learning that the dramas offered children

consider how to plan effective dramas for themselves

take away materials to support them in their planning

network and have fun!

Please come in comfortable workshop clothes.

To sign up, go to shopping cart below to pay through SDEA's online payment system by 1 May 2012. Please allow a few days to respond with a confirmation.

Would your drama club like to help raise awareness amongst youths and young adults about suicide prevention? Then be a part of ‘Catch You When You Fall’ a showcase of 10 minute plays that show, with open communication and acceptance of people as they are - we can help.

‘Catch you When You Fall’ is SDEA’s effort to help raise awareness on suicide prevention.

In November last year, IMH held a tee-shirt design competition, SDEA thought some of the slogans on the tee-shirts of finalists were perfect for play titles.

So we’re inviting students to create original 10 minute plays showing that with open communication and acceptance of people as they are - we can help.

These student-led pieces must carry one of these titles:

The Best Thing about Life is Being Alive (title credit: Karen Chan)

Life Gets Shaky Sometimes – Hang On (title credit: Nor Liyana Nor Man)

Whatever Happens Tomorrow, You Have Today (title credit: Yvonne Tan Pei Yin)

Live (title credit: Jason Khoo Soon Chang)

We’re keeping it simple!

Each group should have no more than 4 actors. We will only provide you with 4 chairs - however, you can bring any props you need as long as they can fit into a big, blue IKEA bag!

E-mail all scripts by 15th April to sdeaconnect@gmail.com. Selected plays will be invited to perform on one of these dates: 1st June & 2nd June, 7pm at the Chamber, The Arts House. You don’t have to pay to take part and each team will be given 2 complimentary tickets. Additional tickets can be purchased from the Arts House box office.
