About Singapore Drama Educators Association

The Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA) is a cause and profession driven organisation with a vision that drama is a vital element in the development and transformation of an individual in society.

Its mission is to advocate for the educational and artistic value of drama and to advance the profession of the drama educator.

Established in 2002, by artists, arts educators and arts managers, this not-for-profit organisation is run entirely by passionate volunteers from these fields. It is managed by a committee of 9 volunteer members elected on a 2-year cycle.

SDEA continues to strive towards raising the bar for the training of drama and arts educators in schools and in the community as well as enriching lives while contributing to the local arts scene.

The work of its committee members is to nurture the profession and the professional by:

  • Raising community and general awareness on the use of drama in different fields and communities through talks, forums and festivals
  • Initiating dialogue and establish connections with members, professionals in related fields, organizations and educational institutions
  • Engaging in discussions on initiatives and projects with different government bodies and in relation to arts and education
  • Facilitating professional development activities like workshops, master classes and SDEA signature events, ‘Connections’ ‘Celebrate Drama’ ‘SDEA Theatre Arts Conference’ as well as our annual publication, ‘Damatize!’
  • Producing resources, publications and foster research projects
  • Developing outreach programmes for special needs and the underprivileged
  • Advancing professionalism of drama educators
  • Liaising with related international associations
  • Ensuring effective administration and governance
